Violet Red Bile Glucose Agar is used for the enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae in foods and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.Formulated according to ISO 21528:2017 (all parts), VRBGA is a modification of Violet Red Bile Lactose Agar (NCM0089) introduced by Mossel in 1978. VRBA contains lactose which is fermented by members of the coli/ aerogenes group, this medium gives a ‘coliform’ count. The VRBGA formula modification replaces lactose with glucose. Glucose is fermented by all members of the Enterobacteriaceae thus gives a presumptive Enterobacteriaceae count. Bile salts and crystal violet are used to inhibit Gram positive and non-enteric organisms. GC Agar is used with lysed blood and other supplements for the isolation and cultivation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and other fastidious organisms. GC Agar is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.A nutritious agar base described by Thayer and Martin for the isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The rich peptone mixture is enhanced by the use of corn starch to absorb toxic metabolites and a buffering system is used to maintain neutral pH. The medium is made selective by the use of various antibiotic cocktails. Thayer and Martin originally recommended the use of vancomycin, colistin and nystatin and the addition of trimethoprim which is useful in preventing the swarming of proteus. A color change from purple to yellow indicates growth of a bile tolerant, lactose fermenting organism such as Escherichia coli. Orange Serum Agar is used for the cultivation of aciduric microorganisms associated with spoilage of products and is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.The low pH of fruit juices makes citrus fruit products susceptible to spoilage by yeasts, molds, and the bacteria Lactobacillus and Leuconostoc. In the 1950’s, Hays investigated spoilage in frozen concentrated orange juice. He found that an agar medium containing orange serum (juice) was superior to Lindegren Agar in isolating the microorganisms responsible for spoilage causing a buttermilk off-odor. Murdock, Folinazzo, and Troy found Orange Serum Agar, pH 5.4 to be a suitable medium for growing Leuconostoc, Lactobacillus, and yeasts. CASE is a selective chromogenic agar for the detection of Salmonella that can be used as part of the ISO 6579-1:2017 workflow. It is not intended for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions in humans.CASE utilizes a dual chromogenic system to differentiate between Salmonella and non-target organisms that grow on the agar. The first chromogen is a target for esterase activity present in all Salmonella species, and results in blue/green colonies. The second chromogen is a target for ß-glucosidase activity, present in non-target organisms that are able to grow on the agar and also possess esterase activity. Utilization of the second chromogen masks the presentation of the first, resulting in black colonies in non-Salmonella organisms.
